On this day in music history - Doolittle, by the Pixies (1989)

Doolittle

by the Pixies,

was released in the United States on April 18, 1989.

Track list:

Debaser; Tame; Wave of Mutilation; I Bleed; Here Comes Your Man; Dead; Monkey Gone to Heaven; Mr. Grieves; Crackity Jones; La la Love You; No. 13 Baby; There Goes My Gun; Hey; Silver; Gouge Away.

One of my favorite all-time albums, Doolittle, by the Pixies, is perfect.

From Kim Deal’s first bass chords of Debaser to the final guitar fade out of Gouge Away, which I was lucky enough to witness live at the DAR Constitutional Hall, in 2009, as part of their Doolittle 20th anniversary tour.

The 2009 show opened with the 1929 French silent short film Un Chien Andalou, directed by Luis Buñuel, followed by Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and David Lovering, performing the complete Doolittle album in order.

The audience was an interesting mix of 40-to-50-year-olds and college kids.
So happy the music has inspired newer generations, as it did me in the early 1990s.

Interesting sidenote:
In the run up to my 2012 LASIK surgery, I couldn’t stop hearing Debaser’s line “slicing up eyeballs”, which is not something you can share with anyone not already a Pixies fan.

Thanks to some resourceful and accommodating surgery techs, I was able to have my LASIK performed with an audio backdrop of Debaser and Karma Police by Radiohead.

Ten minutes later, after an on-demand mini concert, I had perfect vision…a pretty great deal.

Thank you, Pixies for Doolittle, a singular, perfect album, inspiring many, many bands that followed, along with being part of the soundtrack of my life.

Recommending reading - The Art of Black and White Photography

The Art of Black and White Photography
Techniques for Creating Superb Images in a Digital Workflow

by Torsten Andreas Hoffmann.

Published by Rocky Nook.
Published 2012.
Paperback.

ISBN-10: 1933952962
ISBN-13: 978-1933952963

Description:
Over the last few years, most books on photography have been focused on the new breed of cameras and how to master the digital imaging workflow. In The Art of Black and White Photography, author and photographer Torsten Andreas Hoffmann takes a different approach, focusing on image composition and image capture, with an emphasis on the creative aspects of black and white photography rather than on the digital workflow.

After introducing the ground rules of composition, Hoffmann illustrates their applications with his own stunning black and white images that cover various photographic genres, including architecture, street photography, portraiture, and surreal photography. Also discussed are the elements of a "photographic language"', which distinguishes creative photography from random shooting. Finally, you will learn valuable post-processing techniques, mostly using Photoshop, that emphasize the functions necessary for creating outstanding black and white images.

This second edition has been updated to include Photoshop CS5, as well as brand new images, content, and a revised layout.
